It was recently reported by an account called Instant Digital on Weibo that Apple will launch the upgraded Apple Watch Ultra in 2025 with a microLED display. Now, analyst Jeff Pu is corroborating the news, suggesting that the microLED Apple Watch Ultra is on track for a 2025 launch (via MacRumors). It was previously reported by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman that microLED display technology for Apple products will be debuted in 2024 while TrendForce claims that Apple's in-house display will be available in 2026.
Prominent display analyst Ross Young initially coined that Apple will debut microLED display technology in 2024 but he later stated that the dates have been moved to the second half of 2025. While the launch time frame might vary from one source to another, it does reaffirm that Apple is working on its microLED display technology. Apple's new display transition from OLED to microLED will be quite similar to how Apple transitioned to its custom silicon from Intel-based chips.
Initially, the microLED display will only be available on the Apple Watch Ultra, and over the course of several years, the company will see fit to incorporate it into additional products. We have previously reported how the company plans to bring microLED displays to the iPhone as well as the iPad. The company could introduce the technology on its higher-end devices first then gradually move to the standard lineup.
Currently, only the 12.9-inch iPad Pro and higher-end MacBook Pro models feature Apple's miniLED displays. The rest of the lineup continues to feature an LCD panel. If we are talking about the iPhone, the 'Pro' models could be the ones to get microLED displays first, ahead of the standard models. For instance, microLED displays can reach higher brightness levels, enhance color accuracy, and reduce the chances of screen burn-in issues.
