Apple's latest iPhone 15 series features Qualcomm's X70 modem for enhanced 5G speeds with better connectivity. According to the latest, next year's iPhone 16 Pro models are expected to house Qualcomm's Snapdragon X75 modems for advanced 5G capabilities. The news was shared by industry analyst Jeff Pu in a research note, suggesting that the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will feature Qualcomm's Snapdragon X75 modem. The company is planning to create a wider gap between the standard and the 'Pro' models as Pu speculates that the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will continue to feature the Snapdragon X70 modem. Currently, the entire iPhone 15 lineup comes with the new X70 modem.
Apple has rarely used the same modem for its entire iPhone lineup which which means that this year's iPhone series is an exception to Apple's approach. As for what the new Snapdragon X75 modem will have in store is better integration with carriers and faster download and upload speeds. The modem was announced earlier this year in February and will be a major upgrade from the X70 modem.
Internally, the mmWave and sub-6GHz 5G transceiver save 25 percent more space on the circuit board. Furthermore, it consumes 20 percent less power which will contribute to better battery life, according to The Verge. The modem also supports the 5G Advanced standard that will allow for better connectivity for data transfer, artificial intelligence, and machine learning capabilities, The iPhone 16 Pro models could take better advantage of the new X75 modem with its forthcoming iOS 18 update coupled with the A18 Pro chip.
It is still too early to conclude how the iPhone 16 Pro will perform but based on the X70 modem in the current models, it will be more than a welcome addition. Take note that these are early speculations as the iPhone 16 Pro launch is almost a year away. The devices are expected to bring various upgrades in terms of internals and potentially the design as well.
Apple is also planning to introduce its custom modems for the iPhone in the future but the technology is not ready at this stage. It was previously reported that the company will introduce its in-house modems in 2025 but it could take a while longer if production challenges are not tackled.
