The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is said to arrive with the Adreno 750 GPU, and according to previously leaked test results, the graphics processor was upwards of 80 percent faster than the Adreno 740 found in the current-generation Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. Unfortunately, that performance gap might reduce slightly from commercial units, as a new rumor claims that the Adreno 750 might be downclocked, with Qualcomm likely targeting a new threshold in power efficiency.

It was previously rumored that the Adreno 750 running in the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 would operate at a 903MHz frequency. Unfortunately, thanks to @faridofanani96, who spotted a Weibo post from a tipster named ‘Feiwei,’ that clock speed would be reduced to 770MHz. The short post does not go in-depth as to why Qualcomm would sacrifice the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3’s performance, but it might have to do with achieving a specific power-efficiency target.
Since the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is not mass produced on TSMC’s 3nm or N3B process, Qualcomm likely only has minimal power headroom before it starts seeing diminishing returns from the Adreno 750. It is possible that reducing the clock speed from 903MHz to 770MHz saw the greatest battery life improvement and thermals, with a minute hit to performance.
At this stage, it is unclear if the ability to overlock the Adreno 750 will be available to smartphone manufacturers, but companies like ASUS, who make gaming handsets, should have this flexibility. Sadly, the massive performance gains that we saw in leaked benchmarks may not exist anymore, with even the A17 Pro’s 6-core GPU possibly gaining the upper hand.
Then again, users will not have to worry about their devices overheating as much with this frequency downgrade, with the Adreno 750 able to maintain its performance when running benchmarks and graphically intensive applications such as games. Thankfully, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Summit is right around the corner, so we will know the complete specifications of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and see which rumor held its ground, so stay tuned.
